Imports of textiles and apparel in August surged from China and saw gains from other Asian suppliers as well, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 9.19 billion square meter equivalents in August 2021, up 3.0 percent from July 2021 and 34.8 percent from August 2020. Textile imports totaled 6.35 billion SME, down 1.1 percent for the month but up 44.5 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.84 billion SME were up 13.1 percent from July and 17.1 percent from a year before.
Total year-to-date imports were 59.1 billion SME, up 47.2 percent from the previous year, as textile imports rose 56.0 percent to 40.3 billion SME and apparel imports rose 31.2 percent to 18.7 billion SME.
For the year ending in August, imports were 86.6 billion SME, up 37.3 percent from the previous year. Textile imports rose 47.2 percent to 59.0 billion SME and apparel imports gained 20.0 percent to 27.6 billion SME.
