Background

Imports of textiles and apparel fell 4.8 percent from February to March, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 7.80 billion square meter equivalents in March, down 4.8 percent from February but up 2.2 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 6.22 billion SME, down 5.6 percent from a month earlier but up 0.4 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.02 billion SME were down 2.4 percent for the month but up 7.8 percent from a year before.

For the year to date, total imports were up 12.8 percent from a year earlier to 24.6 billion SME, with textile imports up 14.2 percent to 18.1 million SME and apparel imports up 9.2 percent to 6.4 million SME.

For the year ending in March 2025, total imports were up 15.6 percent compared to a year earlier, to 109.4 billion SME. Textile imports rose 18.3 percent to 83.1 billion SME while apparel imports were up 7.8 percent to 26.3 billion SME.
