Textile and Apparel Imports See Small Gain

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.72 billion square meter equivalents in June, up 0.7 percent from May and 3.1 percent from June 2017. Textile imports totaled 3.49 billion SME, up 15.9 percent for the month and 5.4 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.23 billion SME were up 12.1 percent from May but were down 0.3 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 32.0 billion SME, up 4.5 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 6.9 percent to 19.0 billion SME and apparel imports rose 1.2 percent to 12.9 billion SME.

For the year ending in June imports were 66.2 billion SME, up 4.3 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports increased 7.2 percent to 38.9 billion SME and apparel imports rose 0.6 percent to 27.3 billion SME.
