Background

Imports of textiles and apparel saw substantial monthly and yearly gains in April as shipments from non-traditional suppliers continued to increase, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 10.2 billion square meter equivalents in April 2022, up 8.9 percent from March and 65.5 percent from April 2021. Textile imports totaled 7.52 billion SME, up 20.1 percent for the month and 83.7 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.68 billion SME were down 13.8 percent from March but up 29.7 percent from a year before.

Total year-to-date imports were 36.3 billion SME, up 45.5 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 56.2 percent to 25.2 billion SME and apparel imports rose 25.9 percent to 11.0 billion SME.

Total imports for the year ending in April 2022 were 105.7 billion SME, up 43.6 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports gained 51.5 percent to 73.9 billion SME while apparel imports rose 28.6 percent to 31.7 billion SME.
