Imports of textiles and apparel saw substantial monthly and yearly gains in May as India, Turkey, and Vietnam continued to climb the rankings of major suppliers, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 10.7 billion square meter equivalents in May 2022, up 4.9 percent from April and 42.7 percent from May 2021. Textile imports totaled 7.91 billion SME, up 5.2 percent for the month and 51.9 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.77 billion SME were up 3.4 percent from April and 21.6 percent from a year before.
Total year-to-date imports were 47.0 billion SME, up 44.9 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 55.1 percent to 33.2 billion SME and apparel imports rose 25.0 percent to 13.8 billion SME.
Total imports for the year ending in May 2022 were 100.9 billion SME, up 40.4 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports gained 48.7 percent to 76.6 billion SME while apparel imports rose 23.9 percent to 32.2 billion SME.
