Imports of textiles and apparel were up 1.6 percent in November following a 7.3 percent increase in October, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel. The data indicate that shipments from traditional suppliers slipped somewhat while imports from some historically underutilized sources saw sharp increases.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 9.05 billion square meter equivalents in November 2021, up 1.6 percent from October 2021 and 32.7 percent from November 2020. Textile imports totaled 6.54 billion SME, up 7.9 percent for the month and 35.8 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.51 billion SME were down 12.2 percent from October but up 25.2 percent from a year before.
Total year-to-date imports were 85.3 billion SME, up 39.1 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 45.5 percent to 58.4 billion SME and apparel imports rose 26.9 percent to 27.0 billion SME.
For the year ending in November, total imports were 91.6 billion SME, up 37.8 percent from the previous year. Textile imports rose 44.9 percent to 62.8 billion SME and apparel imports gained 24.6 percent to 28.8 billion SME.
