Major Shippers See Major Hit as Textile and Apparel Imports Tumble

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.58 billion square meter equivalents in November, down 18.2 percent from October but up 3.3 percent from November 2017. Textile imports totaled 3.56 billion SME, down 10.2 percent for the month but up 7.0 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.02 billion SME plummeted 29.1 percent from October and were down 2.7 percent from a year before.

Overall Imports. Total year-to-date imports were 63.0 billion SME, up 5.4 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 7.6 percent to 37.3 billion SME and apparel imports rose 2.2 percent to 25.7 billion SME.

For the year ending in November imports were 68.0 billion SME, up 5.2 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports increased 7.7 percent to 40.3 billion SME and apparel imports rose 1.8 percent to 27.6 billion SME.
