Nutrition Labeling Requirements for Meat and Poultry Products to be Updated
The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is proposing to amend the nutrition labeling requirements for meat and poultry products to better reflect the most recent scientific research and dietary recommendations and to improve the presentation of nutrition information to assist consumers in maintaining healthy dietary practices. Specifically, this rule would do the following.
- update the list of nutrients that are required or permitted to be declared
- provide updated daily reference values and reference daily intake values that are based on current dietary recommendations from consensus reports (e.g., remove the requirement to declare calories from fat, require the declaration of added sugars, and permit the voluntary declaration of vitamins A and C)
- amend the labeling requirements for foods represented or purported to be specifically for children under the age of four years, pregnant women, and lactating women and establish nutrient reference values specifically for these population subgroups
- revise the format and appearance of the “Nutrition Facts” label (e.g., increasing the type size for “calories,” “servings per container,” and the serving size declaration and bolding the number of calories and the serving size declaration)
- amend the definition of a single-serving container
- require dual-column labeling for certain containers
- update and modify several reference amounts customarily consumed
Comments on this proposal are due by March 20.
