Statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel show that importers are continuing to diversify their sourcing of textiles and apparel amid ongoing supply chain challenges. Major monthly and yearly gains were recently registered for non-traditional suppliers like Egypt, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Sweden.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 8.92 billion square meter equivalents in July 2021, up 4.4 percent from June 2021 and 45.3 percent from July 2020 (when trade volumes were lower in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic). Textile imports totaled 6.42 billion SME, up 3.4 percent for the month and 62.1 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.51 billion SME were up 8.2 percent from June and 14.9 percent from a year before.
Total year-to-date imports were 49.9 billion SME, up 49.7 percent from the previous year, as textile imports rose 58.4 percent to 34.0 billion SME and apparel imports rose 34.0 percent to 15.9 billion SME.
For the year ending in July, imports were 84.2 billion SME, up 34.0 percent from the previous year. Textile imports rose 44.3 percent to 57.1 billion SME and apparel imports gained 16.5 percent to 27.2 billion SME.
