Background

The Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that as of Sept. 2 it has implemented a new electronic system for companies to apply for, renew, or amend designated port exception permits.

The FWS states that all wildlife must generally be imported or exported through an FWS-designated port (listed in 50 CFR 14.12) and that those wishing to import or export wildlife through a different port may apply for a DPEP. Such permits are only issued for scientific purposes, to minimize deterioration or loss, or to alleviate undue economic hardship.

In the past importers and exporters had to complete a paper DPEP application and submit it to an FWS Office of Law Enforcement Permit Office. The voluntary new electronic application (which can be found here) facilitates the application and issuance process and allows users to track the status of their applications, pay application fees electronically, and copy previous applications for renewal of a DPEP.
