The Drug Enforcement Administration is accepting comments through Nov. 21 on a proposal to add ethylphenidate (ethyl 2-phenyl-2-(piperidin-2-yl)acetate), including its salts, isomers, and salts of isomers, to schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. This substance is a central nervous system stimulant and shares structural and pharmacological similarities with other schedule II stimulants such as methylphenidate.
This rule would impose the administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions and regulatory controls applicable to schedule I substances on the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, possession, research, conduct of instructional activities, and chemical analysis of this substance.
