Background

Export Inspections

The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service has issued a notice certifying the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and the Washington State Department of Agriculture to provide official inspection services at export port locations in Alabama and Washington, respectively. AMS has also designated and/or renewed the designation of official agencies to provide official inspection services at locations other than export port locations in specified geographic areas.

Poultry from Canada

Effective Oct. 4 the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has removed restrictions on imports of poultry, commercial birds, ratites, avian hatching eggs, unprocessed avian products and byproducts, and certain fresh poultry products originating from or transiting zone PCZ-219 in Saskatchewan, Canada. As a result, APHIS no longer maintains restrictions on imports of such goods from anywhere in Canada.

Citrus from Botswana

APHIS is considering a request to allow imports of fresh commercially produced citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, and sweet orange) from Botswana into the U.S and has drafted a pest risk assessment that lists the potential pests likely to remain on these commodities upon importation if no mitigation is applied. Comments on this assessment, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessment before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by Nov. 4.
