Poultry
The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has imposed restrictions on imports of avian commodities from the following areas in Canada and Japan due to concerns about highly-pathogenic avian influenza.
Canada
- zone PCZ-279 in Alberta (effective Oct. 7
- zone PCZ-280 in Ontario (effective Oct. 8)
- zone PCZ-281 in Manitoba (effective Oct. 9)
- zone PCZ-282 in Manitoba (effective Oct. 10)
- zone PCZ-283 in Quebec (effective Oct. 12)
- zone PCZ-FV4 in British Columbia (effective Oct. 13)
- zone PCZ-FV5 in British Columbia (effective Oct. 13)
- zone PCZ-FV6 in British Columbia (effective Oct. 13)
- zone PCZ-FV10 in British Columbia (effective Oct. 13)
- zone PCZ-284 in Quebec (effective Oct. 13)
- zone PCZ-285 in Manitoba (effective Oct. 15)
- zone PCZ-286 in Saskatchewan (effective Oct. 16)
- zone PCZ-287 in Alberta (effective Oct. 16)
- zone PCZ-288 in Manitoba (effective Oct. 20)
Japan
- Hokkaido prefecture (effective Oct. 22)
These restrictions include the following.
- Importation of poultry, commercial birds, ratites, avian hatching eggs, unprocessed avian products and byproducts, and certain fresh poultry products is prohibited.
- For Japan only, importation of unprocessed avian products and byproducts, and certain fresh poultry products, originating from or transiting the named prefecture is prohibited.
- Importation as cargo of processed avian products and byproducts must be accompanied by an APHIS import permit and/or government certification confirming that the goods were treated in accordance with APHIS requirements.
- Importation as cargo of fresh, unprocessed shell/table eggs and egg products, void of the shell (e.g., liquid eggs and dried egg whites) is prohibited unless they are consigned from the port of arrival directly to an APHIS-approved breaking and pasteurization facility. An import permit and/or certificate is not required in such cases.
APHIS has also removed restrictions on imports of poultry and related products originating from or transiting zones PCZ-270 in Manitoba, Canada (effective Oct. 16), and PCZ-273 in Alberta, Canada (effective Oct. 29) that had been imposed due to concerns about HPAI.
Pork from Taiwan
Effective Oct. 21 APHIS has imposed the following restrictions on the importation of porcine (pork, swine, or pig) commodities from Taiwan due to African swine fever.
- Importation of live swine and swine germplasm is prohibited.
- Processed porcine products and byproducts, if arriving as cargo, must be accompanied by an APHIS import permit and/or government certification confirming that the items were treated in
accordance with APHIS requirements.
- Importation of unprocessed porcine products and byproducts arriving as cargo is prohibited with limited exceptions. In some cases these goods can be imported if they are consigned directly from the port of arrival to an eligible USDA-approved establishment.
