President Trump hosted Brazilian President Lula da Silva at the White House on May 7, where the two leaders discussed a range of matters of particular importance to the bilateral relationship. Trade issues figured prominently in the discussions, with President Trump noting in a social media post that “the meeting went very well.”
Among other things, the two sides reportedly agreed to meet within the next 30 days to carry out further discussions on tariffs, with President Lula expressing optimism about the possibility of reaching a mutually acceptable understanding. A May 7 press release from the Office of the Brazilian President indicated that the expectation of the Brazilian government is that these discussions would lead to the closure of the Section 301 investigation on Brazil’s acts, policies, and practices that was launched in July 2025.
President Lula also highlighted the recent passage by the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies of a new regulatory framework for critical minerals and emphasized that Brazil is open to receiving investment from the U.S. and other countries in this sector.
