India’s and Sri Lanka’s Food Labeling Rules
The Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports that India has published amendments to its Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations, 2020, for prepackaged food products, which will apply from July 1, 2027. According to FAS, the amendments introduce key updates to the existing labeling framework, including by:
- exempting infant nutrition products from certain recommended dietary allowance labeling requirements;
- revising provisions for minimally processed foods;
- simplifying requirements for specific categories, such as nutraceuticals;
- relaxing logo display norms for small packages;
- comprehensively updating labeling requirements for non-retail containers, including mandatory disclosures, traceability through accompanying documents, and clear identification as non-retail products; and
- requiring prominent, clear labels for fortified foods to enhance transparency, practicality, and compliance.
Separately, Sri Lanka welcomes input from WTO members by June 6 on its draft Food (Labeling and Advertising) Regulations 2026.
China’s Food Standards
FAS reports that on April 17 China published 37 draft national food safety standards soliciting public input through June 6. These draft standards address such matters as labeling requirements for prepackaged special dietary foods; pasteurized milk, sterilized milk, and nuts and seeds; foods for special medical purposes; food additives; food nutritional fortification substances; food contacting material products; operational sanitation protocol for contaminants in foods; migration testing methods for food contacting materials; and testing methods for food culture strains and pathogenic bacteria in foods.
Indonesia’s Import Licensing for Various Products
FAS reports that beginning May 8 Indonesia will require import licenses for soybean meal, wheat for feed, broken rice for feed, mung beans, pears, and peanuts. However, transitional provisions allow shipments that were loaded prior to entry into force to proceed without being subject to the new requirements.
