Background

President Trump has issued a proclamation that restores the status of Gabon as a beneficiary sub-Saharan African country under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Gabon’s AGOA eligibility had been terminated as of Jan. 1, 2024, due to an unconstitutional change of government. In reversing that decision the proclamation said only that the president has determined that Gabon now meets the applicable eligibility requirements.

AGOA is currently authorized through Dec. 31 and will require congressional action to remain in effect after that date.
