The International Trade Administration has announced procedures for extending the 25 percent Section 232 tariff on imported automobile parts to additional parts. The presidential proclamation establishing this tariff directed the DOC to allow for such additions.
Domestic producers of auto parts will be able to submit requests during two-week windows that will open four times annually in January, April, July, and October. The first window will open July 1, 2025.
Requests must include (1) applicant identification, (2) description of requested auto part, (3) eight or ten-digit HTSUS number, (4) explanation of why the article is an auto part, (5) information on the domestic industry affected, (6) statistics on imports and domestic production, and (7) description of how and to what extent imports of the article have increased in a manner that threatens to impair national security or undermine Section 232 automobile tariff objectives.
The ITA will review requests on a rolling basis during each window. Following that period a non-confidential version of each valid request will be posted on regulations.gov and open for public comment for 14 days. The ITA will then make its final determination within 60 days of receiving the request.
