The Consumer Product Safety Commission is seeking public input by June 17 on whether recent changes to the voluntary standard for sling carriers improves the safety of these products and should therefore become mandatory.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 provides that if a voluntary standards organization revises a voluntary standard that has been adopted by the CPSC as a mandatory consumer product safety standard, the revised standard will become mandatory 180 days after the date on which the relevant organization notifies the CPSC unless a determination is made that the revised standard does not improve the safety of the covered product.
