Poultry
The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has imposed the following restrictions on the importation of poultry and related products originating from or transiting zones PCZ-270 in Manitoba (effective May 7) and PCZ-271 in Prince Edward Island (effective May 15), Canada, due to concerns about highly-pathogenic avian influenza.
- Importation of poultry, commercial birds, ratites, avian hatching eggs, unprocessed avian products and byproducts, and certain fresh poultry products is prohibited.
- Importation of processed avian products and byproducts, imported as cargo, must be accompanied by an APHIS import permit and/or government certification confirming that the goods were treated in accordance with APHIS requirements.
- Importation of fresh, unprocessed shell/table eggs and egg products, void of the shell (e.g., liquid eggs and dried egg whites), imported as cargo, is prohibited unless they are consigned from the port of arrival directly to an APHIS-approved breaking and pasteurization facility. An import permit and/or certificate is not required in such cases.
- Fully finished, non-shelf stable and/or non-commercially packaged and labeled food products containing pasteurized egg/egg product ingredients, originating from or transiting all of Canada, must be accompanied by an APHIS import permit.
Separately, APHIS has removed restrictions on imports of poultry and related products originating from or transiting zones PCZ-261 in Newfoundland and Labrador (effective May 22) and PCZ-266 in Ontario (effective May 27.)
Wheat and Barley
The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports that Argentina has extended through March 26 its lower 9.5 percent export tax on wheat and barley. Export taxes on corn, sorghum, soybeans, and sunflowers will return to their higher levels on July 1.
Dairy
FAS states that as of May 10 Costa Rica has streamlined the process for all U.S. dairy facilities and products seeking export registration to Costa Rica. Companies exporting industrial dairy ingredients that may have previously followed a different registration process must now also register under this new process. This includes ingredients such as whey, casein, butter oil, and sweet cream. FAS notes that any U.S. dairy product arriving to Costa Rica from an unregistered facility could face rejection or be detained until the facility has been registered.
Pineapple
APHIS has announced that imports of fresh pineapple fruit from Indonesia for consumption may be authorized beginning May 29, subject to specified phytosanitary measures.
