Background

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a final rule establishing a mandatory safety standard for adult portable bed rails, effective Aug. 21.

APBRs are generally installed or used alongside of a bed and are intended to reduce the risk of falling from the bed or to assist the consumer in repositioning or transitioning into or out of the bed.

The final rule establishes a mandatory performance requirement and test procedure to reduce the risk of entrapment and other hazards associated with the use of APBRs. All APBRs sold in the U.S. and manufactured after the effective date must comply with these performance and testing requirements. The new standard incorporates by reference the ASTM F3186-17 voluntary standard with specified modifications.
