Background

Assessments paid by importers of live porcine animals and pork and pork products under the Pork Promotion, Research, and Consumer Information Order would be reduced for the first time in many years under a proposed rule from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service. Comments on this proposal are due by Aug. 19.

Importers of live porcine animals must currently pay an assessment of 0.4 percent of the animal’s declared value upon importation, while importers of pork and pork products must pay an assessment of 0.4 percent of the market value of the live porcine animals from which those products were produced.

Under this proposal the assessment for live porcine animals would be reduced to 0.35 percent, while assessments for specified pork and pork products would be set at 15 to 25 cents per pound.
