Pre-Packaged Foods

The Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports that as of March 12 Burma has prohibited importers from using stickers to communicate mandatory information on pre-packaged food labels. The revised requirement still allows labeling in English provided mandatory information is clearly and permanently displayed on the original packaging. FAS encourages U.S. exporters to coordinate with their importers as the change may complicate the sale of U.S. products in Burma that are transshipped and stickered or labeled in another regional market.

Horses

Effective June 15 USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has added horses to the list of animal commodities originating from or transiting Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, and/or Austria whose importation is restricted due to concerns about foot-and-mouth disease.

Horses from these areas, including those that have contact with horses from these areas at any time within five days immediately prior to export, must complete the established FMD protocol. This includes no direct or indirect contact with domestic or wild ruminants or swine for at least five days before arrival to the U.S. and decontamination in an APHIS-approved import quarantine facility upon arrival.

Horses transiting these areas will only need to complete the FMD protocol upon arrival. Horses that have resided in an FMD-free country for a minimum of five days after residing in these areas do not need to complete the FMD protocol.

Poultry

Effective July 6 APHIS removed restrictions on imports of poultry and related products originating from zones PCZ-326 in Saskatchewan and PCZ-327, -328, and -330 in Alberta, Canada, that had been imposed due to concerns about highly-pathogenic avian influenza.
