India

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai will visit India Jan. 12-14 to meet with Indian trade minister Piyush Goyal. The two officials will co-chair a ministerial-level meeting of the U.S.-India Trade Policy Forum, which will address agriculture, industrial products, services, intellectual property protections, and other issues aimed at enhancing the resiliency of the bilateral trade relationship.

India and the United Kingdom will hold another round of talks this week on a proposed bilateral free trade agreement. Talks were launched two years ago and encompass 26 chapters.

The Telegraph reports that another round of negotiations on a proposed FTA between India and Oman will begin next week and that talks on the texts of most of the chapters have already been concluded.

FTAs

A Yonhap article reports that Guatemala has formally signed a deal to join South Korea’s free trade agreement with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama, Honduras, and Nicaragua, which took effect in March 2021. The agreement is expected to be implemented in the second half of 2024.

According to a BNN article, Hong Kong has signed a protocol to amend its FTA with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations by enhancing the product-specific rules of origin. This will expand the coverage of the agreement from about 200 categories of products to nearly 600, including jewelry, drugs, food products, and textile goods.
