Background

The Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that, beginning Jan. 7, all shipments into and out of the U.S. containing American eels (Anguilla rostrata), including their parts and products, must be accompanied by the appropriate export permit, certificate of origin, or re-export certificate issued pursuant to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Shipments of such eels must also be inspected and cleared by FWS’ Office of Law Enforcement at a designated port or a port authorized under a designated port exception permit.

The FWS is taking this action after this species was added to CITES Appendix III, which lists species that are protected in at least one country that has asked CITES parties for assistance in controlling trade.
