Background

Bell Peppers from Spain

In December 2022 the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued an order prohibiting imports of fresh bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) for consumption from Spain to prevent the introduction of the Mediterranean fruit fly. APHIS also prohibited overland in-bond transit movements of such peppers south of 39° latitude and west of 104° longitude.

Now, effective Jan. 19, APHIS has amended that order to allow such imports to resume under the import requirements currently listed in the Agricultural Commodity Import Requirements database and the corrective actions listed in the amended order.

Pork from Montenegro

Effective Jan. 14 and until further notice, APHIS is restricting the importation of live swine, swine germplasm, and unprocessed products and byproducts originating from or transiting Montenegro based on the diagnosis of African swine fever in domestic swine. Processed pork products and byproducts may still be imported as cargo from Montenegro but must be accompanied by an import permit and/or government certification, or both, confirming that the products were treated according to APHIS requirements.
