USTR reports that at the ninth meeting of the U.S.-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework held Feb. 23 in Washington, D.C., the two sides discussed a number of trade- and investment-related issues and concerns, including agriculture, digital trade, intellectual property protection and enforcement, labor rights, good regulatory practices, and women’s economic empowerment. Specific matters addressed at the meeting included the following.
Beef – the U.S. welcomed the substantive conclusion by Pakistan of technical work on market access for U.S. beef and the ministers noted that work to operationalize the arrangement would be expedited
Digital trade – engagement in digital trade matters will be intensified in advance of the next TIFA Council meeting in light of its importance to the bilateral economic relationship
Mangoes and dates – Pakistan welcomed the ongoing engagement on market access for its mangoes and fresh dates and requested that the U.S. review additional market access requests for Pakistan’s agricultural products once the current work is complete
Other agricultural products – both sides expressed their intent to enhance engagement on market access and the reduction of barriers for additional agricultural products
Women’s economic empowerment – the two sides affirmed a mutual commitment to advancing programs and policies that elevate the role of women in Pakistan’s long-term economic growth
Worker rights and IPR – the U.S. appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to improve worker rights and protections and to strengthen its intellectual property regime
