Background

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a final rule establishing a mandatory safety standard for crib mattresses, effective Aug. 15, 2022.

This rule establishes a standard for full-size and non-full-size crib mattresses as well as after-market mattresses for play yards and non-full-size cribs. It incorporates by reference ASTM F2933-21, with five modifications to make the standard more stringent to further reduce the risk of injury associated with the use of crib mattresses.

This rule also (1) identifies crib mattresses as a category of durable infant or toddler products under section 104(f) of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which requires the establishment of consumer registration programs for such products, and (2) adds crib mattresses to the list of products that require third-party testing and certification.
