Background

The Department of Justice reports that the former owner of an international freight forwarding company has been sentenced to 24 months in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiracy to illegally ship aircraft parts and avionics from U.S. manufacturers and suppliers to Russia, including for the benefit of sanctioned Russian companies.

According to the DOJ, the freight forwarder was an affiliate in a group of companies that did business in various countries, including the U.S. and Israel. The owner, through those companies, operated as a forwarder of choice for individuals and entities seeking to illegally export goods to Russia in violation of U.S. export control laws.

The DOJ states that between approximately March 2022 and May 2023 the owner facilitated the export of aircraft parts and avionics, including those with missile technology applications, from the U.S. to various third-party transhippers on behalf of Russian customers. As part of a plea agreement he admitted that this scheme involved deceiving U.S. companies about the true destination of the goods at issue and that he and others attempted to conceal this scheme by submitting false information in export documents filed with the U.S. government.
