Background

The Department of Transportation  has announced more than $241 million in grant funding for 25 projects to help address supply chain disruptions. The funds were awarded under the Port Infrastructure Development Program, which provides planning and capital financing and project management assistance to support efforts by ports and industry stakeholders to improve facility and freight infrastructure to meet current and future national freight transportation needs. The PIDP will receive $450 million in annual funding through fiscal year 2026 to rebuild roads, bridges, and rails; modernize ports and airports; and achieve related goals.

Projects newly funded include the following.

- rail enhancements at Long Beach, Calif., to increase operational efficiency for port cargo

- a fourth roll-on/roll-off vessel berth at Brunswick, Ga., to add needed capacity and more efficiently accommodate the larger vehicle carriers that are becoming the industry standard

- reconstructing piers and docks in the Dominican Republic damaged by hurricanes

- expansion of the Bayport container terminal in Houston

- construction of an off-dock container support facility in Tacoma, Wash.

- improvements to a berth and cargo transfer location at the Granite City, Ill., harbor facility

- construction of a pier for a crane to be used for direct barge-to-truck unloading of cargo in Tell City, Ind.

- new rail spur in Aberdeen, Miss.

- new rail storage yard to support operations at Bay St. Louis, Miss.

- a regional planning study for the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority to address its comprehensive cargo handling, environmental, and economic development needs
