APEF. Nora Todd, senior director for international economics at the National Security Council, is in Costa Rica this week to take part in a planning meeting focused on the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity summit to be hosted by that country in 2025. APEF trade ministers recently met to identify a number of measures to be taken over the next few months. Countries currently participating in APEF include Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the U.S., and Uruguay.
South America. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose Fernandez will visit Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru Aug. 21-29 to discuss APEF developments, engage on critical minerals supply chains, and promote trade and economic opportunities with the U.S.
Kenya. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative reports that during the most recent negotiating round on the U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership, held Aug. 5-9 in Nairobi, officials primarily exchanged views on texts regarding agriculture; customs, trade facilitation, and enforcement; good regulatory practices; workers’ rights and protections; environment; and inclusivity. The two sides are working to conclude an agreement by the end of this year.
