Background

Imports of textiles and apparel slipped in June after several months of growth and were lower than a year earlier, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 8.43 billion square meter equivalents in June, down 4.2 percent from May and 16.7 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 6.38 billion SME, down 6.3 percent for the month and 13.2 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.05 billion SME rose 3.0 percent from May but were down 25.9 percent from a year before.

Imports of textiles and apparel were 44.8 billion SME for the year to date in June, down 21.4 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports were 33.2 billion SME, down 18.0 percent, while apparel imports fell 29.7 percent to 11.6 billion SME.

For the year ending in June, total imports were down 15.2 percent to 93.6 million SME. Textile imports lost 13.3 percent to 67.4 billion SME while apparel imports fell 19.9 percent to 26.2 billion SME.
