Background

Imports of textiles and apparel saw a monthly decline but a yearly gain in June, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 10.1 billion square meter equivalents in June 2022, down 5.6 percent from May but up 18.5 percent from June 2021. Textile imports totaled 7.35 billion SME, down 7.1 percent for the month but up 18.4 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.76 billion SME edged down 0.4 percent from May but rose 19.0 percent from a year before.

Total year-to-date imports were 57.1 billion SME, up 39.4 percent from the previous year, as textile imports jumped 46.9 percent to 40.5 billion SME and apparel imports rose 24.0 percent to 16.6 billion SME.

Total imports for the year ending in June 2022 were 110.4 billion SME, up 35.6 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports gained 42.4 percent to 77.8 billion SME while apparel imports rose 21.7 percent to 32.7 billion SME.
