Background

U.S. Customs and Border Protection publicly announced recently the opening at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport of the nation’s first CBP centralized examination station with direct access to an airport air operations area. This CES enables the direct transfer of cargo from airplanes to the CBP inspection facility and features the latest non-intrusive inspection technology to expedite cargo exams. CBP intends for it to serve as a model for future port efforts throughout the U.S.

CBP Dallas Area Port Director Jayson Ahern said the onsite CES gives DFW Airport “the cargo processing space to consolidate CBP enforcement efforts amid the unprecedented volume of international e-commerce shipments.” CBP noted that e-commerce clearances at DFW increased from 16,000 in fiscal year 2020 to 20 million in FY 2023 and have already exceeded 23 million in the first half of FY 2024. However, Ahern said, CBP has already seen “greater speed and efficiency in clearing cross-border e-commerce and imports targeted for inspection” at this facility since its inception.
