The fifth negotiating round for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework will be held Sept. 10-16 in Thailand, following the fourth round talks that took place July 9-15 in Korea.
IPEF was launched in 2022 with the aim of strengthening U.S. ties to the region and creating “a stronger, fairer, more resilient economy for families, workers, and businesses.” Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are the current participants, and each of them except India has pledged to take part in all the initiative’s four pillars: trade (which India opted out of), supply chains, clean economy, and fair economy.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative indicates the IPEF partners will continue to make progress on negotiations towards high-standard outcomes under pillars I (trade), III (clean economy), and IV (fair economy). USTR and the Department of Commerce will hold a virtual stakeholder listening session Aug. 24 ahead of the fifth negotiating round (registrations are due by Aug. 21), as well as an in-person stakeholder listening session Sept. 14 in Bangkok (registrations are due by Sept. 7).
