Swine Imports from Kosovo
Effective July 17 the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service added Kosovo to the list of countries considered affected by African swine fever. As a result, processed pork products and byproducts imported from Kosovo as cargo must be accompanied by a Veterinary Services import permit and/or government certification confirming that the products were treated according to APHIS requirements.
Unprocessed pork products and byproducts imported from Kosovo as cargo will not be permitted to enter the U.S. except in some cases if they are consigned to a USDA-approved establishment.
Imports of live swine, swine germplasm, and unprocessed swine products and byproducts from Kosovo were already prohibited due to the presence of other swine diseases in that country.
Avocados from Peru
APHIS is considering a request to allow the importation of fresh avocado fruit from Peru into the U.S. for consumption and has drafted a pest risk assessment that lists the potential pests likely to remain on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation is applied. Comments on this assessment, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessment before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by Sept. 4
