U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently signed a mutual recognition arrangement with the customs administrations of Guatemala and Colombia.
According to CBP, the essential concept of mutual recognition is that the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism and the foreign customs administration’s comparable program have established a standard set of security requirements that allows one program to recognize the validation findings of the other, benefiting both customs administrations and private-sector participants.
For example, when an entity joins CTPAT it agrees to work with CBP to protect the supply chain, identify security gaps, and implement specific security measures and best practices. Applicants must address a broad range of security topics and present security profiles that list action plans to align security throughout their supply chains.
