Background

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will host a public forum July 11 in Alexandria, Va., to solicit and share ideas related to green trade innovation and incentivization of clean and sustainable supply chains and trade decarbonization.

CBP announced in June 2022 a strategy outlining how it will work to accelerate the global transition to green trade and decrease its own environmental footprint as part of an effort to address climate change. Measures envisioned under this strategy include streamlining cargo clearance, adding environmental criteria to trusted trader programs, reimagining the entry process, expanding the collection of supply chain data, and aggressive imposition of penalties.

However, CBP states that while it has the ability to influence global supply chain practices and enforce against natural resource crimes, “greening global supply chains and combatting the negative impacts of climate change and environmental degradation will necessitate innovative partnerships between public and private organizations with a stake in building a more sustainable future for trade.”

Toward that end, the upcoming forum will feature a showcase where members of the international trade community can (1) share their successes, best practices, challenges, and lessons learned in greening their own operational processes and footprints and (2) discuss the ways they are working with supply chain and other business partners to reduce emissions, protect natural resources, and generate innovative solutions. Those who wish to participate in this showcase must submit a proposal to CBP by May 22.

In addition, CBP is inviting other members of the public to participate by submitting public comments (also due by May 22) on green data as a strategic asset, green trade incentives, and green trade-related research and innovation. Specific issues of interest include data found to be useful in greening trade operations and additional data CBP could provide that would be helpful, tangible benefits CBP could provide trade entities to incentivize their transition to more sustainable trade practices, and technology solutions that could increase the sustainability of global trade flows.
