Background

Imports of textiles and apparel continued to see year-over-year declines from many traditional suppliers in February, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 5.78 billion square meter equivalents in February 2023, down 15.4 percent from January and 28.6 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 3.97 billion SME, down 15.0 percent for the month and 27.4 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.81 billion SME fell 16.2 percent from January and 31.0 percent from a year before.

Imports of textiles and apparel were 12.6 billion SME for the year-to-date in February, down 24.5 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports were 8.64 billion SME, down 24.7 percent, while apparel imports fell 24.2 percent to 3.97 billion SME.

For the year ending in February, total imports were up 1.1 percent to 101.7 million SME. Textile imports gained 2.6 percent to 71.9 billion SME while apparel imports slipped 2.1 percent to 29.8 billion SME.
