Background

The International Trade Commission is accepting comments through May 18 on proposed modifications to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. These changes would conform the HTSUS to the hundreds of amendments to the global Harmonized System that were recently adopted by the World Customs Organization and are scheduled to enter into force on Jan. 1, 2028.

The ITC is also inviting input on its proposal to subdivide HTSUS 3004.90.92 (other medicaments) into nine new subheadings. This subheading already has more than 70 subordinate statistical provisions for specific goods and there are limits to how many more can be added, the ITC said, which is a concern given that the agency anticipates continuing private-sector demand for such provisions.

The ITC expects to submit its recommended HTSUS modifications to the president in December.
