Background

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 4.48 billion square meter equivalents in March, down 4.9 percent from February but up 6.0 percent from March 2016. Textile imports totaled 2.55 billion SME, down 2.7 percent from February but up 4.6 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.93 billion SME were down 7.7 percent from February but up 7.9 percent from a year earlier.

Total year-to-date imports were 14.7 billion SME, up 1.2 percent from the previous year, as textile imports gained 0.9 percent to 8.23 billion SME and apparel imports rose 1.5 percent to 6.44 billion SME.

For the year ending in March 2017 imports were 63.1 billion SME, down 0.6 percent from a year earlier, as textile imports slipped 0.4 percent to 36.1 billion SME and apparel imports lost 0.8 percent to 27.0 billion SME.
