Background

Imports of textiles and apparel resumed their upward trend in July after slipping in June but were still lower than a year earlier, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 9.06 billion square meter equivalents in July, up 7.5 percent from June but down 9.3 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 6.66 billion SME, up 4.4 percent for the month but down 5.6 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.40 billion SME jumped 17.1 percent from June but were down 18.2 percent from a year before.

Imports of textiles and apparel were 53.9 billion SME for the year to date in July, down 19.6 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports were 39.9 billion SME, down 16.2 percent, while apparel imports fell 28.0 percent to 14.0 billion SME.

For the year ending in July, total imports were down 16.9 percent to 92.7 million SME. Textile imports lost 14.5 percent to 67.0 billion SME while apparel imports fell 22.5 percent to 25.6 billion SME.
