Risk-Based Sampling for Imports of Bananas and Plantains

The Department of Agriculture and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have announced that they will begin risk-based sampling of banana and plantain shipments at U.S. ports of entry starting Sept. 26. The goal of this sampling is to reduce inspections on entities importing commodities compliant with current pest and disease regulations.

The agencies state that there are no changes to the required entry paperwork but that trade entities should file that paperwork prior to arrival if possible and include APHIS core message set data to ensure their shipments are processed according to risk-based sampling procedures.

Imports of Avocados from Guatemala Under Consideration

The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is considering a request to authorize the importation of fresh Hass avocados from Guatemala for consumption. APHIS has drafted a pest risk assessment that lists the potential pests likely to remain on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation is applied. Comments on this assessment, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessment before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by Oct. 19.
