Imports of Dragon Fruit from Dominican Republic Under Review
The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is considering a request to authorize the importation of dragon fruit from the Dominican Republic for consumption. APHIS has drafted a pest risk assessment that lists the potential pests likely to remain on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation is applied. Comments on this assessment, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessment before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by July 13.
Imported Kiwifruit Would See Amended Requirements Under USDA Proposal
The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service is accepting comments by Aug. 16 on a proposal to revise the minimum size and uniformity requirements for all varieties of Actinidia chinensis species kiwifruit, which is commonly known as golden kiwifruit, regulated under the relevant marketing order.
This proposed rule would be issued under section 8e of the Agricultural Marketing Agreement Act of 1937, which provides that whenever certain specified commodities, including kiwifruit, are regulated under a federal marketing order, imports of these commodities into the U.S. are prohibited unless they meet the same or comparable grade, size, quality, or maturity requirements as those in effect for domestically produced commodities.
