Imports of textiles continued their recent increase in April while imports of apparel continued to struggle, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 8.32 billion square meter equivalents in April, up 9.0 percent from March and 6.1 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 6.56 billion SME, up 13.9 percent for the month and 8.1 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.76 billion SME were down 5.9 percent from March and 0.5 percent from a year before.
Imports of textiles and apparel were 30.1 billion SME for the year to date in April, up 9.5 percent from the previous year. Textile imports were 22.4 billion SME, up 12.8 percent, while apparel imports totaled 7.67 billion SME, up 1.0 percent.
For the year ending in April 2024, total imports were down 1.8 percent compared to a year earlier, to 95.2 billion SME. Textile imports rose 2.1 percent to 70.8 billion SME while apparel imports fell 11.6 percent to 24.4 billion SME.
