President Trump issued Dec. 31 a proclamation delaying for one year increases in Section 232 tariffs on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities.
In September 2025 Trump issued a proclamation imposing the following Section 232 tariffs on imported timber, lumber, and derivative products: 10 percent on softwood timber and lumber, 25 percent on certain upholstered wood products, and 25 percent on kitchen cabinets and vanities. The proclamation provided that as of Jan. 1, 2026, the tariff on upholstered wood products would increase to 30 percent and the tariff on kitchen cabinets and vanities would increase to 50 percent.
However, citing “productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products,” the Dec. 31 proclamation delays those two increases until Jan. 1, 2027. As a result, the current Section 232 tariffs on affected products will remain in effect until that time.
The proclamation also states that the Jan. 1, 2027, tariff increase will not apply to imports of covered products from “countries with which the United States reaches an agreement that addresses the threatened impairment of the national security posed by imports of wood products.”
