Background

The GSP Subcommittee of the Trade Policy Staff Committee has accepted for review a country practices petition regarding worker rights in Thailand that was submitted as part of the annual review of the Generalized System of Preferences. The subcommittee has also terminated its country practices review of worker rights in the Philippines without change to that country’s GSP benefits, in view of progress made by the government of the Philippines in addressing worker rights issues.

The GSP Subcommittee will hold a two-day hearing Jan. 14-15 on the country practices petition regarding worker rights in Thailand, as well as to receive information on recent developments pertinent to the ongoing country practices reviews regarding worker rights and/or child labor in Fiji, Georgia, Iraq, Niger and Uzbekistan and arbitral awards in Ecuador. The deadline to submit pre-hearing briefs and requests to appear at the hearing are due by Jan. 4, while post-hearing briefs and statements may be submitted by Feb. 12.
