Background

International Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standard-Setting Activities

The Department of Agriculture has issued a notice informing the public of the sanitary and phytosanitary standard-setting activities of the Codex Alimentarius Commission for the periods July 20, 2018, to June 21, 2019, and June 21, 2019, to May 31, 2020. This notice also provides a list of other standard-setting activities of Codex, including commodity standards, guidelines, codes of practice, and revised texts. USDA is requesting public comments on standards under consideration as well as recommendations for new standards.

Codex is the principal international organization for establishing standards for food. Through the adoption of food standards, codes of practice, and other guidelines developed by its committees and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to ensure fair trade practices in the food trade, protect the health of consumers, and promote coordination of food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Import Restrictions on Bulgaria Continued

Effective Oct. 3, 2018, the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has added Bulgaria to the list of regions considered to be affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza. This action follows APHIS’ Oct. 17, 2017, imposition of HPAI-related restrictions on imports of poultry, commercial birds, other types of birds (research, performing), ratites, avian hatching eggs, unprocessed avian products and byproducts, and certain fresh poultry products from Bulgaria as a result of the confirmation of HPAI in that country.
