Background

Imports of Plants, Fruits Under Consideration

The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is considering requests to authorize the importation into the continental U.S. of (a) commercially-produced plants of Trident maple, Japanese maple, and Korean maple for planting from South Korea, (b) apricot, nectarine, peach, European plum, and Japanese plum from Australia, and (c) basil from Ethiopia. APHIS has drafted separate pest risk assessments that list the potential pests likely to remain on these commodities upon importation if no mitigations are applied. Comments on these assessments, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessments before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by Feb. 3.

HTSUS Codes Updated for Products Subject to Beef Assessment

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service has issued a direct final rule updating the HTSUS numbers for imported cattle, beef, veal, and beef products subject to assessment under the Beef Promotion and Research Order. This assessment is $1 per head for live cattle and ranges from $0.00379102/kg to $0.02090075/kg for beef and beef products.

This rule will be effective Feb. 7 unless significant adverse comments are received by Jan. 23.
