Background

Electronic Permits

The Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has announced that, beginning this fall, importers will be able to apply for and receive fresh fruit and vegetable import permits through the new eFile online permitting system. All such permits will be valid for three years.

Until this transition is made, APHIS will continue issuing permits through ePermits. Those issued after June 1 will be valid for one year only.

Chives from Ethiopia

APHIS is considering a request to authorize the importation of fresh chives from Ethiopia for consumption into the continental U.S. APHIS has drafted a pest risk assessment that lists the potential pests likely to remain on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation is applied. Comments on this assessment, including information that might lead APHIS to revise its assessment before identifying pest mitigations and proceeding with the commodity import approval process, are due by May 28.

Pork from Indonesia

Effective Dec. 13, 2019, APHIS has added Indonesia to the list of regions affected with African swine fever. This action prohibits the importation of pork and pork products from Indonesia except if processed and treated in a specified manner or consigned to an APHIS-approved establishment for further processing. This change also restricts the importation of swine casings that originated in or were processed in Indonesia.
