The Department of Agriculture and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced April 12 that the government of Argentina has finalized technical requirements that will allow fresh, chilled, and frozen pork and pork products from U.S. animals to be imported into Argentina for the first time since 1992. A joint press release states that the U.S. is the world’s top pork exporter, with global sales totaling $6.5 billion in 2017, and that Argentina is a potential $10 million-per-year market.
The White House announced an agreement reopening the Argentinean market to U.S. pork last August but said exports would not resume until Argentine food safety officials conducted on-site verification of the U.S. meat inspection system and any outstanding technical issues were resolved. USTR and USDA say the two sides have now finalized new terms for market access that are practical, science-based, and consistent with relevant international animal health standards.
